COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

United Kingdom

Campaigners in the UK focused their actions on disinvestment. On 2 August Amnesty International UK hosted a meeting with the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), attended by Thomas Nash of Article 36, Kimberly Brown on behalf of the CMC, Esther Vandenbroucke from Netwerk Vlaanderen, Suzanne Oosterwijk from IKV Pax Christi, and Oliver Sprague and Verity Coyle from Amnesty International UK. The discussion focused on ongoing concerns about RBS investments in Alliant Techsystems and Lockheed Martin, listed as cluster munition producers in the May 2011 report 'Worldwide Investments in Cluster Munitions' by IKV Pax Christi and Netwerk Vlaanderen.

During the month of August Amnesty International UK will be undertaking media activities, supported by some other UK campaigners and aimed at ending RBS' investments in cluster munition producers. UK campaigners are working with the UK government to press them to follow up on the previous government's statement that it would set up a multi-stakeholder working group to draw up a voluntary code of conduct to prevent investments in cluster munition producers.
