COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

The Netherlands

On Monday 1 August, the Convention on Cluster Munitions officially entered into force for the Netherlands so the celebration marked this milestone in addition to the first anniversary of entry into force for the Convention.  A policy brief was sent to the Ministry of Foreign affairs outlining what becoming a State Party means for the Dutch efforts to implement the treaty’s provisions. A particular focus was on the importance of maintaining an international leading role when it comes to making funding available for clearance and VA, and also called on them to send a delegation of high representatives to Beirut to report on the Dutch progress.

A number of flash-mob like activities will took place in the Hague.  These actions were directed mainly to the public since all of the policy makers and civil servants are on recess. Building on the theme “Join the Team”, a group of cheerleaders (with pom-poms) gave a short, positive and encouraging performance.  The cheerleads wore “join the team” t-shirts and handed out flyers with information and balloons with the “Join the Team” logo. A press release was issued on the day.
