COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

Spain

Six CMC members in Spain: Fundació per la Pau, Greenpeace, Justícia i Pau, Moviment per la Pau, Plataforma per la Pau Lloret and Setem will took part in a 1 August action in Lloret de Mar, a village near Barcelona.

Participants met at 18.00 in the athletic zone with 40 children from summer camps in Lloret, with local sports people and government representatives.  The event started remarks from Mabel Bustelo from Greenpeace and Jordi Armadans from Fundació per la Pau who spoke about cluster munitions and the Convention on Cluster Munitions that bans them.   Five sports men and women were at the event: Miquel Molina (pilot from Audi and Red Bull in the DTM), Angel Mullera, (Spanish champion of the 3.000 m obstacles race), Meritxell Carreras (USAP and Spanish selection rugby player), José Luís Blanco (Olympic in Beijing and sub champion of Europe in the 3.000 m obstacles race in 2010), Eva Arias (Spanish champion of the 3000 m obstacles in 2010).  These five athletes signed letters of support for the Convention on Cluster Munitions calling on all countries to join the treaty.  Marc Muniesa from the FC Barcelona was not able to attend but gave his support for the event.

Participants then walked one round of the track to commemorate the first entry into force and at the end of the lap threw their hats in the air.  Media attended and covered the event and the caps were donated by the City of Lloret. Other materials were distributed such as caps, banners, and flyers with the logo and key messages.  At the end of the event participants gathered in the middle of the stadium and formed in a shape of a peace symbol and heard closing remarks from the mayor of Lloret de Mar, Romà Codina.
