COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

Sierra Leone

On 1 August SLANSA facilitated the publication of a news story calling on the Government of Sierra Leone to expedite plans to design a policy or national legislation on cluster munitions and landmines. This was published by The Exclusive newspaper on Monday, August 1, and Concord Times on Tuesday, August 2. Campaigner Abu Bakarr Sheriff granted interviews to Cotton Tree Network Radio (CTN), which broadcast via community radio stations across the country, and the Eagle Radio Station, based in Freetown. A press release was distributed to ten media outlets, and government institutions including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the afternoon an entertaining football match between two amputee teams, both representing the Sierra Leone Single Leg Amputee Sport Club took place at Cole Farm community, just west of Freetown, and adjacent to the Murray Town Military Barrack. The venue was selected because the community is densely populated with inhabitants, most of who suffered directly during the eleven years of internecine conflict, and still have scars and horrific memories about aerial and sea bombardment during 1997-98.
