COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

Ethiopia

An orientation session, a sport activity and a centre visit was organised in collaboration with the Ethiopian National Association of Physically Handicap (ENAPH) at the Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation Center.  The Chairman of ENAPH, members of the branch association and staff and trainees from the center participated in the events.

Since most of the participants were not aware of the Convention on Cluster Munitions, an orientation session took place to introduce this to participants.  The session covered cluster munitions and landmines, the Convention on Cluster Munitions and the Mine Ban Treaty and the current status of the two treaties.

The sport activities were played by wheelchair and crutch user and included 50 and 100 meter races.  These activities demontrated that persons with disabilities can participate in sport.  One of the people at the event is a paralympic champion from Oromia state.

The events concluded with a visit of the centre which includes six training and production workshops.  The workshops are: woodwork, metal work, lumbering, hair dressing, shoe manufacturing and tannery (wallets and hand bags).  All of the workshops were preparing for a big exhibition and bazaar that will take place in Adama.
