COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

The Congolese Campaign to Ban Landmines and the National Associate of Landmine Survivors hosted an event in Kinshasa at the Re-education Centre of Physical Disabilities under the patronage of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior.  The event included a panel discussion on the challenges of the implementation of the Convention on Cluster Munitions.  Remarks were delivered by the Vice Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior.  André Tabaro, Coordinator of the National Association of Survivors spoke about the Second Meeting of States Parties; Francky Miantuala, Coordinator of the Congolese Campaign to Ban Landmines and Cluster Munitions spoke about the Vientiane Action Plan; Sudi Kimputu, Coordinator of the National Focal Point on the Struggle Against Mines spoke about implementation of the Vientiane Action Plan. The Vice Prime Minister said he will work to ensure that the DRC ratified the Convention on Cluster Munitions before the 2MSP so that it can participate as a State Party.

There was a sport demonstration of the sport “Nzango” which is a popular local game played by women and was played by number of women including those with disabilities.  Participants at the events included stakeholders of mine and cluster munition action, landmine and cluster munition survivors and members of the national regulatory authority of mine action.
