COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE
Campaigners conducted media outreach about entry into force. Firoz Alizada conducted a live interview with a local TV station on 1 August. On 29 August the Afghan Landmine Survivors Organization (ALSO) organised a drumming event in busy parts of the city, including in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidential (Gul Khana) Palace, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Defence. Campaigners distributed over 2000 educative posters, flyers and booklets about cluster bombs sending a clear message to the Government of Afghanistan that ratification of the Convention needs to be realised as soon as possible, ahead of the 1MSP in November. Several cluster munition and landmine survivors participated in the event throughout the day, with a large number being interviewed by members of the media present. Some of the survivors took part in awareness efforts among the public. Throughout the day, members of the media interviewed survivors, provided on-going coverage and devoted a significant amount of time to the messages that were being disseminated. Local television broadcasters gave a large amount of coverage to the event.
