COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

Guatemala

Campaigners from ECPAT held a meeting with the MFA on 5 August to celebrate entry into force and to continue lobbying for ratification of the Convention.  The Norwegian Ambassador was invited to speak about the Oslo process. Other key actors presented different subjects related to the treaty. ECPAT also organised a working group involving the key actors concerning the promotion of the CCM, both domestically and internationally, for August 18 at 9am. The aim of the meeting was to advocate the fast ratification of the CCM through Congress. A number of speakers attended, including representatives from both the Guatemalan and Norwegian governments, as well from the CMC. Together, they covered the history of the CCM up to date, as well as the steps necessary to achieve ratification. The meeting was a great success, and a compromise was reached as Zuri Ríos, the President of the Congressional Foreign Affairs Commission, committed to ratification by the end of the year. Furthermore, it was agreed that a joint press conference at the Guatemalan national Congress would be arranged for the near future between all of the institutions that participated in the working group. Here, CIRC is going to present their awareness video about cluster munitions.
