COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

Chile

A number of NGOs collaborated on a drumming event (batucada) and a flashmob in remembrance of the 29 victims of a munition factory explosion in Alto Hospicio.  A petition was available to sign during these events and was handed to Sebastian Piñera, the current president of Chile, asking him to ratify the Convention on Cluster Munitions.  The event took place in Plaza de Armas on 1 August at 12:00pm.

On 2 August, Centro Zona Minada delivered a letter to the President requesting that Chile ratify the CCM. From 2-4 August, he also took part in meetings with members of the military, including General Antonio Cordero, the man responsible for stock destruction.  In Alto Hospicio village, where the factory explosion occurred on 25 January 1986, children took part in a balloon launch to mark entry into force.
