COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

Ethiopia

In conjunction with the Ethiopian National Association for the Physically Handicapped, an entry into force celebration was held on 1 August under the slogan “Beat the Drum to Ban Cluster Bombs”. Campaigners printed the “beat the drum” logo on to capes that were then distributed out to participants. In addition to this, an event was held in Addis Ababa on 5 August at annual meeting of the survivors group Yitaweklign Yeakalgudatagnoch Mehiber (YYM). Including three government officials, forty people attended to hear a presentation given by Bekele Gonfa about the current status of the Convention and its entry into force that day. The event received wide coverage from Ethiopian television channels.

Campaigners and survivors of cluster bombs launched the new film “The Ban Advocates: From Victims to Champions” in Mekele at the school that was hit by a cluster bomb strike in 1998. The film was also launched in Addis Ababa.
