COUNTDOWN TO ENTRY INTO FORCE

Burundi

On 9 July, CMC representatives worked in conjunction with the government of Burundi to organise an official celebration of the upcoming entry into force of the Convention on Cluster Munitions. Accompanied by the sound of drumming, the ceremony was opened by Georges Ntidendereza, the CMC contact point in Burundi, who explained the history of the CMC and the Convention. He was then followed by the principal Private Secretary to the Minster of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and the Belgian Ambassador. The opening ceremonies were followed by a press conference, where a national action plan concerning victim assistance was proposed, as well as the designation of a central government body to deal with issues surrounding the implementation of Article 5 of the CCM.
